East Division teams help scouts earn badges

Pomona Quarry and the Greensboro District hosted Boy Scouts of America event

Pomona Quarry and the Greensboro District hosted a joint event with the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ) to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the North Carolina Geological Survey. 

A main draw of the event was the opportunity for members of the local Boy Scouts of America chapter to earn their Mining in Society merit badges. 

“This event was incredible,” said Anna Kelly, the division's communications and sustainability specialist. “We even had a few kids tell us that they want to pursue mining as their career – you can’t beat that!” 

More than 45 participants, including 30 scouts, attended the event, hearing presentations from both the NCDEQ and Martin Marietta, touring the site and participating in a group discussion. 

Greensboro District General Manager Daniel Flores said the group’s eagerness to learn about the operation and mining process impressed him. 

“The scouts were inquisitive and asked great questions, and it was refreshing to see a group of young people wanting to learn as much as they could about a subject,” he said. “It was also great to see the excitement and support of the parents. It shows what a great organization the Boy Scouts of America is and how our company can help meet their needs.” 

Flores added that this kind of event is vital to having a great relationship with the area’s neighbors before thanking Pomona Plant Manager Shane Hopson, the quarry crew and local safety, environmental and sales professionals for their excellent work.
